Toyota FJ repair manual

Toyota FJ

With style and off road performance reminiscent from the original Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a retro style SUV produced around 2006. FJ40 Cruiser shares many structural underpinnings from the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. And in around November of 2013, Toyota has announced that the Trail Teams edition will be the last model for FJ40 Cruiser. At 183.9 inches in length, the FJ Cruiser is the longest compact SUV offered by Toyota in North America, slotting between the smaller RAV4 and the mid-size Highlander. Toyota sources many components from other vehicles to produce the FJ including shared engines and transmissions found in the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner as well as suspension components used in the Prado, Hilux, Tacoma, and 4Runner.

Toyota FJ FAQ's

How often should I change the oil in my Toyota FJ?

Oil should be changed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first. Regular oil changes are essential to maintain engine performance and extend the life of your vehicle. Neglecting oil changes can lead to engine damage and decreased fuel efficiency.

How often should I check the tire pressure in my Toyota FJ?

Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month. Properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency, tire longevity, and overall vehicle performance. Underinflated or overinflated tires can lead to uneven wear, reduced handling, and increased risk of a blowout.

How often should I replace the brake pads in my Toyota FJ?

Brake pads should be replaced when the friction material thickness reaches the minimum recommended level, typically around 2-3 millimeters. However, the exact replacement interval may vary depending on driving conditions and individual driving habits. Regularly inspecting the brake pads and having them replaced as needed is essential for safe braking performance.

How often should I replace the cabin air filter in my Toyota FJ?

The cabin air filter should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or as indicated in your vehicle's maintenance schedule. A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can reduce the effectiveness of your vehicle's HVAC system, leading to decreased airflow and potential allergen buildup. Regularly replacing the cabin air filter helps to maintain a clean and comfortable interior environment.

How often should I replace the drive belt in my Toyota FJ?

The drive belt should be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary. The exact replacement interval may vary depending on driving conditions and belt condition. Signs of wear, cracking, or stretching indicate that the drive belt should be replaced. Maintaining a properly functioning drive belt is crucial for the operation of various engine accessories.

How often should I replace the engine air filter in my Toyota FJ?

The engine air filter should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or as indicated in your vehicle's maintenance schedule. A clogged or dirty air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, leading to reduced power and decreased fuel efficiency. Regularly replacing the air filter helps to maintain optimal engine performance.

How often should I replace the fuel filter in my Toyota FJ?

The fuel filter on a Toyota FJ is typically not serviceable as it is integrated into the fuel pump assembly. However, if you experience fuel-related issues, it is recommended to consult a qualified technician or refer to your vehicle's manual for further guidance. Regularly maintaining a clean fuel system helps to prevent fuel delivery problems and maintain engine performance.

How often should I replace the spark plugs in my Toyota FJ?

The spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles or as specified in your vehicle's maintenance schedule. Worn or faulty spark plugs can lead to misfires, reduced fuel efficiency, and engine performance issues. Regularly replacing the spark plugs helps to ensure proper combustion and smooth operation.

What is the recommended battery type for my Toyota FJ?

The recommended battery type for a Toyota FJ is a maintenance-free, lead-acid battery with the appropriate cold cranking amps (CCA) rating for your vehicle. It is important to choose a battery that meets the manufacturer's specifications to ensure proper electrical system operation and starting reliability. Consult your vehicle's manual or a trusted mechanic for the correct battery size and type.

What is the recommended coolant type for my Toyota FJ?

The recommended coolant for a Toyota FJ is a long-life ethylene glycol-based coolant with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and distilled water. It is important to use the correct coolant type and maintain the proper coolant level to prevent overheating and potential engine damage. Refer to your vehicle's manual for specific coolant specifications.

What is the recommended engine oil viscosity for my Toyota FJ?

The recommended engine oil viscosity for a Toyota FJ can vary depending on the specific model and engine type. It is important to consult your vehicle's manual or the oil cap for the correct oil viscosity. Commonly recommended viscosities for Toyota FJ models include 5W-30 and 10W-30. Using the proper oil viscosity helps to ensure optimal engine lubrication and performance.

What is the recommended power steering fluid for my Toyota FJ?

The recommended power steering fluid for a Toyota FJ is Toyota Genuine Power Steering Fluid or an equivalent fluid that meets the manufacturer's specifications. Using the correct power steering fluid is essential for proper power steering system operation and to prevent damage to seals and components. Consult your vehicle's manual for specific fluid recommendations.

What is the recommended tire rotation pattern for my Toyota FJ?

It is recommended to rotate the tires on your FJ every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. The preferred tire rotation pattern for a Toyota FJ is a cross pattern, where the front tires are moved straight back and the rear tires are moved diagonally forward. This helps to ensure even tire wear and prolong tire life.

What is the recommended transmission fluid for my Toyota FJ?

The recommended transmission fluid for a Toyota FJ is Toyota Genuine ATF WS (World Standard) or equivalent. Using the correct transmission fluid is crucial for optimal transmission performance and longevity. It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications for proper fluid selection.

What type of fuel should I use in my Toyota FJ?

It is recommended to use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher for optimal performance. Using a lower octane fuel may result in decreased power and potential engine knocking. Additionally, using diesel or any other fuel not specifically recommended for your FJ can cause severe damage to the engine.
