Toyota FJ Cruiser repair manual

Toyota FJ Cruiser

The Nissan NX is a front wheel drive 2-door sports car produced by Nissan Motors. The NX1600 was based on the standard 1.6L Sentra (engine code GA16DE), and the NX2000 was based on the 2.0 L SE-R model (engine code SR20DE). Most models were fitted with T-Tops, whilst others were hardtop. Constructed in Japan, was sold from 1991-1993 in the US (mainly competing with the Mazda MX-3, Isuzu Piazza and Honda Civic Del Sol). Also, it was produced for a few more years and sold in other countries. The NX2000 model had some mechanical improvements over its SE-R sibling.

Toyota FJ Cruiser FAQ's

How do I replace a burnt-out headlight bulb in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

To replace a burnt-out headlight bulb in a Toyota FJ Cruiser, open the hood and locate the backside of the headlight assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector from the bulb, then twist and remove the bulb from the assembly. Install the new bulb by reversing these steps, ensuring it is securely in place. It is recommended to consult the owner's manual or a repair manual for specific instructions and bulb replacement types.

How do I reset the maintenance light on my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

To reset the maintenance light on a Toyota FJ Cruiser, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position without starting the engine. Then, press and hold the trip meter reset button until the maintenance light starts flashing. Release the button and turn off the ignition. When you turn the vehicle back on, the maintenance light should be reset.

How often should I change the engine oil in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The engine oil in a Toyota FJ Cruiser should be changed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first. Regular oil changes help maintain the engine's performance and prolong its lifespan. Neglecting oil changes can lead to engine damage and decreased fuel efficiency.

How often should I replace the air filter in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The air filter in a Toyota FJ Cruiser should ideally be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, reducing performance and fuel efficiency. Regularly inspecting and replacing the air filter can help maintain the engine's health.

How often should I replace the brake pads on my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The brake pads on a Toyota FJ Cruiser typically need to be replaced every 25,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on driving habits and conditions. Regularly inspecting the brake pads for wear is crucial to ensure optimal braking performance and safety. If the brake pads are worn down to the minimum thickness, they should be replaced promptly.

How often should I replace the cabin air filter in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The cabin air filter in a Toyota FJ Cruiser should be replaced approximately every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and air quality. A clean cabin air filter improves the air quality inside the vehicle by trapping dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Neglecting to replace a dirty cabin air filter can lead to reduced HVAC system performance and unpleasant odors.

What is the recommended interval for changing the transmission fluid in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Toyota recommends changing the transmission fluid in a FJ Cruiser every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the driving conditions and type of transmission. Fresh transmission fluid helps maintain smooth shifting, reduces wear on internal components, and prolongs the transmission's lifespan. Regularly checking the fluid level and condition is important to ensure proper transmission function.

What is the recommended interval for replacing the spark plugs in a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The spark plugs in a Toyota FJ Cruiser typically need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the type of plugs and driving conditions. Fresh spark plugs ensure proper ignition, optimal fuel efficiency, and smooth engine operation. Regularly inspecting and replacing worn spark plugs can prevent misfires, engine hesitation, and reduced performance.

What is the recommended interval for replacing the timing belt in a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The timing belt in a Toyota FJ Cruiser typically needs to be replaced every 90,000 to 100,000 miles or at the manufacturer's recommended interval. The timing belt is a critical component that synchronizes the engine's valves and pistons, and failure can cause severe engine damage. Regularly inspecting and replacing the timing belt as recommended is essential for maintaining the engine's performance and preventing costly repairs.

What is the recommended tire pressure for a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The recommended tire pressure for a Toyota FJ Cruiser is typically 32 PSI for the front tires and 30 PSI for the rear tires. Proper tire pressure ensures optimal handling, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity. It is important to regularly check and adjust the tire pressure according to the manufacturer's specifications.

What is the towing capacity of a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

The towing capacity of a Toyota FJ Cruiser is approximately 4,700 pounds. However, it is important to consult the owner's manual for the specific towing capacity of your vehicle, as it may vary based on factors such as engine type, transmission, and optional equipment. Properly equipping your FJ Cruiser for towing and adhering to safe towing practices is crucial for both your vehicle and safety.

What should I do if my Toyota FJ Cruiser's battery is dead?

If your FJ Cruiser's battery is dead, you can jump-start the vehicle using jumper cables and another vehicle with a charged battery. Connect the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other end to the positive terminal of the charged battery. Then, connect the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal of the charged battery and a grounded metal surface on the dead vehicle. Start the charged vehicle, let it run for a few minutes, and then attempt to start the FJ Cruiser. If the battery remains dead, it may need to be replaced.

What type of coolant should I use in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Toyota recommends using a high-quality ethylene glycol-based coolant with a mixture ratio of 50% coolant and 50% distilled water. This coolant offers excellent corrosion protection and heat transfer properties, ensuring the engine stays cool and protected. Avoid using plain tap water or incompatible coolants, as they can cause damage to the cooling system.

What type of engine oil should I use in my Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Toyota recommends using a high-quality synthetic 5W-30 engine oil for the FJ Cruiser. Synthetic oil offers better protection against engine wear, improved fuel economy, and enhanced performance in extreme temperatures. Always refer to the owner's manual for the specific oil recommendations and viscosity requirements for your vehicle.
